Fox Entertainment and “Rick and Morty” creator Dan Harmon are collaborating on a new animated series, Krapopolis, produced entirely using blockchain technology. The show will come with a slew of exclusive non-fungible tokens (NFT).
The entertainment giant announced the plans on Monday in a press release for the upcoming 2021-2022 programming season. The show is the brainchild of Dan Harmon, creator of the popular series “Rick and Morty,” and Bento Box Entertainment.
This new blockchain-based animated series is the first of its kind. The show acts as a step into the NFT arena for Fox. Alongside the announcement for Krapopolis, Fox revealed that it’s launching its own NFT company called Blockchain Creative Labs according to a report from the Hollywood Reporter.
Fox says its new NFT marketplace will produce and sell collectibles ranging from “one-of-a-kind character and background art and GIFs, as well as tokens that provide exclusive social experiences to engage and reward super fans.” The NFTs created for Krapopolis hold value not only for collectors but for the broadcaster.
In a statement to advertisers the CEO of Fox Entertainment, Charlie Collier, commented on the company’s place at the forefront of the foray into the crypto space, “as an advertiser-focused, artist-first and animation-obsessed company, Fox is going to take advertisers into the world of Blockchain-powered tokens, including NFTs.”
NFTs, crypto, and entertainment
Fox’s new show is the first animated series to be created using blockchain technology. It’s also the first show to create NFT content based off of a television series for viewers to engage with. However, the entertainment space is teeming with new NFTs and support for the technology.
Recently, Kevin O’Leary, host of the investment TV show “Shark Tank” came out in praise of the future of NFTs saying, “It’s going to be phenomenal.”
At a Christie’s auction last week, nine NFTs from the rare CryptoPunk’s collection sold for nearly $17 million. The sale marked one of the biggest NFT auctions to date for the auction house.
